My Story
As many of you know, I have never liked running and the only time I tolerate it is if I am chasing after a football. However, from now until 5th October, I will be swapping the football boots for running trainers.
I am running the Cardiff Half Marathon for Alzheimer's, a disease that unfortunately has impacted the majority of people's lives one way or another. It is a horrible disease, not only for the person going through it, but also for their surrounding friends and family.
An example of this is one very close to home. My Nan had long, hard, battle with Alzheimer's, lasting more than 10 years. Prior to her diagnosis, and even for the first 5 years following, my Nan was one of the strongest, and most independent women you would ever meet. She would rarely ask for help from anyone, but she would be the first to help others. Seeing her fight the disease was heartbreaking, watching her deteriorate and lose parts of herself was one of the hardest things we as a family have ever experienced. It is not just witnessing the memory loss that was difficult, it was seeing the confusion and frustration that she endured alongside it that made it even harder. Despite everything, she was so brave and battled hard until the very end.
So I am running for my Nan, but also for the other countless families that are experiencing Alzheimer's every day. The half marathon will be physically challenging but nothing compared to the challenges that so many people are facing on a day-to-day basis.
If you are able to, please support me in this road to the Half Marathon, whether that be through a donation, or by sharing my story, and spreading the word about all of the Alzheimer's Society's hard work.
Every penny raised will go towards vital research, better support services, and ultimately, the hope of a future where no one has to go through this horrible, and cruel disease.
Thank you 💜
