My Story
I’m running the Cardiff Half Marathon to raise funds for St. Michael’s Hospice — a remarkable charity that provides compassionate end-of-life care for patients, while also offering vital support to their families during incredibly difficult times.
In October 2023, my beautiful mum was diagnosed with an incurable cancer. Despite the tireless efforts of her medical team to extend her time with us, she sadly passed away the following September. In the final months of her life, Mum was fortunate to be in the care of the exceptional inpatient team at St. Michael’s Hospice. From the doctors and nurses to the volunteers who kindly brought her tea and biscuits, everyone made her feel relaxed and deeply cared for.
In August 2024, Mum's health declined rapidly, and it became clear she might not live to see my wedding. With less than 24 hours' notice, the Hospice team arranged a beautiful ceremony in the gardens just outside her room. Beverley, from the spiritual care team, led a short, heartfelt service, and our closest family members were able to be there. The staff had thoughtfully arranged seating, decorations, a cake, and refreshments — every detail was lovingly prepared. Mum was overjoyed to witness Joe and me get married, and that day brought her immense joy and peace in her final weeks.
In her last days, the Hospice team ensured that Mum remained comfortable and pain-free. As a family, we were guided and supported through every step of the journey. We are endlessly grateful to St. Michael’s Hospice for allowing our mum to pass away surrounded by expert care and with a sense of calm and dignity that brought her, and us, great comfort.
Any donations to support this incredible charity would be deeply appreciated. Thank you so much for your generosity.
